iSafe
- From the i-SAFE site:
- “i-SAFE is a non-profit foundation dedicated to protecting the online experiences of youth everywhere. i-SAFE incorporates classroom curriculum with dynamic community outreach to empower students, teachers, parents, law enforcement, and concerned adults to make the Internet a safer place.”
The i-SAFE curriculum and resources are free once an individual has been trained in the core curricular areas. i-SAFE uses a “train the trainer” model for professional development as well as now offering individual training through the use of videos available on their site. Classroom lessons can be delivered with or without the use of technology. i-SAFE does, however, provide many powerful videos, PowerPoint presentations, and student developed Flash animations (to name a few items) that support the curriculum. Technical work may have to be done to make some of the videos Mac compatible, but i-SAFE has since converted many of them and they are available by contacting i-SAFE support. High School lessons are delivered via Web Casts, which require the use of streaming video or a DVD player.
i-SAFE is a valuable resource as we tackle the issue of Internet Safety with our students. The i-SAFE professional development program is also a valuable tool for educating our teachers and parents. i-SAFE’s mission statement includes the phrase “empowering students.” Their goal is to educate and empower those that are using the Internet the most--our 21st century learners. i-SAFE provides many opportunities for students to not only learn, but to teach and work with others in the area of Internet Safety. There is unlimited potential for student, parent and community work in this area.
