Special Instructions: To access the online streaming videos, select the DVL Builder link, create an account for yourself, and view the videos. The DVL Collection link appears to be the for-fee section of the site.

Intended Purpose:
The NETS Digital Video Library was developed to provide video samples of real teachers implementing the National Educational Technology Standards. The complete library includes video segments related to both Student NETS and Teacher NETS. The video segments, along with related lesson plans and other artifacts, provide rich fodder for individual or group reflection and critique in the course of preservice and inservice professional development.

Intended Audience:
The NETS DVL has materials for all core content areas and grade levels. The intended audience is teachers and teacher educators.

Resource Requirements:
Some materials are available online for free, although the complete library may be purchased by lesson or in sets, on DVD or with an online account (see attached, sent to me by Gary Bitter, the apparent project director). I've examined the freely available streaming video lessons. I haven't been able to get the online forms for reflective note taking to work; these may require the purchased account. The QuickTime videos themselves, however, work fine, once you've discovered the best player for your machine. The streaming seems quite fast and smooth on the DSL and higher connections I've tested.

Abstract:
The DVL collection is a rare compilation of high-quality videos of classrooms in action, in this case, integrating technology. The quality of the videos and the range of topics and grades levels make them suitable for any number of professional development needs.

From the project site:

“This project will provide the needed catalyst for the nationwide implementation of the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for students and teachers. A consortium led by Arizona State University (ASU), in partnership with the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), Casio, and others will lend their united experience and resources to this effort. The consortium will develop, evaluate, and disseminate an online, digital video library (DVL) of teachers integrating technology. The DVL series of standard-based instruction is based on the NETS for Students: Connecting Curriculum and Technology (2000) and the teacher standards publication NETS for Teachers: Preparing Teachers to Use Technology. Teacher candidates and educators will be able to access video of the technology standards in action, anytime, anywhere. The DVL will be supplemented with expert commentary and curriculum resources. Online technology in foundations courses for preservice teachers will also be developed.”

Justification:
Video of real classroom settings can help teachers and teacher educators think more deeply about practices, standards, and technology integration.  The videos in this resource are of very high technical quality, with good video, sound, and even subtitles.  Vivid artifacts of technology integration in action may be helpful for anyone discussing what technology integration really means.  These examples don't necessarily represent best practices, but they can be viewed critically and systematically in light of teacher and student NETS (or Tech GE's).  The fact that they are non-Vermont teachers gives us a rare opportunity to objectively examine a teacher's classroom.
