The focus of this
unit is on how the components of culture (or universals) develop
differently from culture to culture depending upon physical
environment. Using universals of culture as their lens, students
will choose a country, identify its unique physical characteristics
(landforms, climate, resources, etc.) and analyze how these have
influenced specific cultural components of the people living there
(e.g., Material Culture: food, clothing and adornment, housing and
shelter, transportation, household articles; and The Arts, Play and
Recreation. By
researching the physical geography and culture of a particular region
and interviewing local immigrants and/or people in other countries,
students will collect information to create virtual exhibits
using Web2.0 tools which will highlight the connections between environment and culture
and the importance of being responsible, respectful global citizens.
