21st Century Media Literacy Inter-disciplinary Unit

Students will begin the inquiry by viewing multiple media advertisements while classifying them into positive and negative, or realistic and unrealistic images. They will track their media consumption throughout a portion of the unit. They will evaluate their exposure to a vast amount of media and create a pie chart of percents linked to media consumption. Students will focus on body image advertisements and how that affects their sense of self. They will document their findings throughout the unit and make a 2-minute commercial advertising a positive or negative message to the audience using the FLIP camera. They will use a vast array of Web 2.0 tools to communicate their findings and educate their community about media literacy. They will collaborate with two community resources to gain a deeper understanding and meaning of body image in a series of workshops. Students will host a community forum displaying their inquiries and commercials to the public to raise body image awareness.
