MCS GOALS for 2007-2008
Posted 11/13/07
The litmus test of a good
school is not its innovations but rather the solid, purposeful,
enduring results it tries to obtain for its students. Carl
Glickman
The
Monkton School’s process for goal selection and action planning is
always based upon best teaching practices and building a process
that brings all students up to a higher academic standard regardless
of gender or socio-economic status.
Developed through committee
discussions and faculty input.
Math
Goal: Continue with the
implementation of a school-wide math facts program. Assess the data
from 2006-2007 and compare it with data we will collect in
2007-2008. Develop program/system/procedure to increase student
learning.

Literature
- Writing / Reading
For the past 3 years, our school has been
working on non-fiction writing. Our plan for 07-08 is to focus on
several areas that will improve our students’ writing. Based on the
work done this year by the faculty (looking at students’ work,
documenting our school curriculum sequence for paragraphing and
teaching graphic organizers, and discussing the strengths and
weaknesses of our literacy program) other areas of need surfaced. We
organized these needs and selected 4 as goals to focus on during the
2007-2008 school year. They include:
Goal: Our MCS student
assessments in writing/reading indicate a disparity exists between
genders. Our goal is to explore what we can do to minimize gender
learning issues. .
Rationale - Research has shown that boys
often have greater difficulty with learning how to read and write
than do girls.

Goal: We plan to review and
continue with our Writers’ Workshop and Readers’ Workshop programs.
Now that teachers have a solid base knowledge of the two programs,
it is time to organize the two systems into a seamless flow of best
practices to optimize student learning.
Rationale – By interweaving the two systems
into a smooth flow and process, teachers can scaffold upon
previously learned vocabulary, procedures, information and
knowledge. Assistance/consultation is needed to progress to the next
level. Our action plan follows.

Goal: Review/examine
available genre resources to assist in the teaching of non-fiction
writing.
Rationale: There are often times when
materials/books are not available to meet the diverse reading and
writing levels in a class. Organizing our resources across grade
levels will provide greater opportunity for students to flourish.

Tech / Literature:
Goal: Utilize on-line
resources to increase student access to materials in the classroom.
Rationale: Finding appropriate non-fiction
text for struggling readers is sometimes difficult. It is evident
there are times when materials/books are not available to meet the
diverse reading and writing levels of students in a classroom.
On-line resources could provide an option for teachers and
students.

Educational Support Team:
Goal: Through our Educational
Support Team Process, we will continue to develop the expertise of
both support staff and teachers to meet the diverse needs of all our
students. This goal includes increasing the ability of staff to
recognize students’ different needs and design curriculum to
maximize instruction. This may be based on gender, socio-economic
backgrounds and/or behavior. The key is to build the capacity of our
staff to handle the diverse needs of our students in and out of
school.
