How did this get started?

In June of 2002 Beeman Elementary was awarded a $7,900 grant from the American Cancer Society's H.E.L.P. (Help Empower Local Partnerships) Fund, to establish a health council to coordinate efforts to create and maintain a healthy school environment.

What is BHST specifically addressing?

Healthy Vermonters 2010 Goals:
Physical Activity & Nutrition and Tobacco

Vermont Department of Education Goals:
Students make informed healthy choices that positively affect the health, safety and well-being of themselves and others.

What have been the special highlights for the first six months?

  • Conducted the Centers for Disease Control's School Health Index Survey and developed a two-year plan to address specific needs

  • Created a community newsletter specific to health issues and community resources. The first issue was mailed in February with planned issues for March, April, May & June

  • Created an after school wellness/exercise program for staff, parents, and community members on Tuesdays from 3-4 pm in the Town Hall

The Beeman Healthy School Team established goals and timelines to address the areas of:

  • Parent & Community Education and Resources

  • Policy & Practice regarding bake sales, breakfast and lunch program

  • Staff Wellness

Meetings are held monthly on a Thursday from 12 noon - 3:30 PM.
